DSS’ Journey to the High Places Conference

In February 2016, I attended a counseling conference with my Tanalian Leadership Center students in our teensy tiny bush village of Port Alsworth, Alaska. After five days of learning about the impact of trauma, grief, relational pain, and abuse, and seeking intense prayer and counseling, the Lord placed the craziest thought I’ve ever had in my life in my mind:

It would be revolutionary if my Street School students could experience this.

That little thought-seed quickly blossomed into something more when I returned to teach at DSS for the 2016-2017 school year and before I knew it, Rebecca of The Hesed Project and I were loading 4 DSS students into a plane bound for rural Alaska.

The heart change that we watched the Lord do in those 4 girls in just 7 days was nothing short of miraculous; in just one week in the wilderness, 1 student experienced Jesus’ presence for the first time in her life, 2 students deepened their walk with the Lord, and 1 gave her life to Christ shortly after our return to Denver.

This year, we will be mirroring our curriculum and healing journey after that of Much-Afraid in Hannah Hurnard’s allegorical novel Hinds’ Feet on High Places. We are hoping to raise enough money to DOUBLE our numbers and take 7 current DSS students and 2 alumni back out to the Alaskan wilderness for a week of intense healing and adventure to the High Places with the Shepherd.

But to do so, we need your help!

Because of our students’ challenging economic situations, we are setting out to raise $7,500 to cover airfare, transportation, conference expenses, food, and housing for the week. We were overwhelmed by your generosity and the Lord’s provision for this trip last year and are confidently hoping that we will raise enough money to send all 7 of our selected students out for the experience of a lifetime.

Would you consider partnering with us as we seek the tender, healing, and adventurous heart of Christ with our students this February?
